I LOVE PIZZA! It’s my go to answer for the question, “If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?” Pizza is that meal that can transform into any other meal. Breakfast pizza, taco pizza, BBQ chicken pizza, I’ve even had a soul food pizza!

Detroit has its own style of pizza becoming popular to the world and a ton of mom-and-pop places as well as chain pizza restaurants. A new joint opened recently right on Library St and it caught my attention. Its sleek look and claims of authentic NYC pizza reeled me in.

The inside of the restaurant is super cute. Even though its technically a pizza joint, I’d still classify this one as a semi-classy date. There were about 10 to 15 specialty brick oven pizzas on the menu that warns they cannot be manipulated because its just that good the way it is. These recipes were curated by six-time World Pizza Games champion, Bruno DiFabio who signs his name proudly next to the disclaimer. The pizzas are 6-slice small pizzas that can be shared between two people if you both aren’t starving and you order an appetizer. The prices range from $14.50 - $17.50 per pizza. Because of my no beef no pork diet and the fact that Mootz prohibits substitution, there were only about 4 pizzas that fit my desires. Even the mushroom pizza had pancetta on it! SMH. I was about to try a few. I went for the Margherita Extra D.O.P. (not sure what the DOP means) and the Popeye.

Popeye

The Popeye named after the fresh spinach topping, also includes garlic, ricotta, mozzarella and Aleppo chili powder sprinkled on top. The spice wasn’t as intense as I thought it would be but added a light kick to each bite.

I also tried the Margherita which features filetto pomodoro(tomato), three cheeses (fior di latte mozzarella, aged mozzarella, pecorino), basil and EVOO. It wasnt the traditional Margherita but it was cheesy and delicious. Both brick oven crusts were super crispy and buttery!

On the menu is also pasta, salads and hoagies like the Chicken Caprese (chicken cutlet, bruschetta, fresh mozzarella, evoo, balsamic glaze, served with side garden salad)

Mootz also has BRUNCH on Sunday from 11a -3p that features breakfast pizzas like the Breakfast of Champions Pizza Pie (bacon, onion, peppers, baked egg, potato, and sausage gravy).

There is HAPPY HOUR M-F from 3p-6p with $5 appetizers and house wine, $2 off draft beers, and $7 well drinks.

Mootz has online ordering with pickup and delivery and they also have a separate entrance to get by the slice pizza called Side Hustle. Pizza slices are the size of a paper plate and they range from $3.49 to $4.99. They even have some pizzas that aren’t on the menu.

I ordered a slice of Buffalo Chicken Pizza. The slice size was great but the price was a bit high for a slice of pizza that probably won’t fill you up. I wanted the buffalo chicken to be spicier than what it was. It was more like a BBQ chicken pizza.

I cant wait to got to brunch in the summer here and try some of the cocktails. Mootz seems like its got the right formula and will be here in downtown Detroit for a while.
